Search Engine Tips
.Realize that it takes time! Although there are search engines that will list your site in a few days (Altavista, Infoseek), most will take weeks or months to include your site. Don't expect top results overnight.
.Popularity plays a part in some of the search engine algorithms (the methodology they use to rank a site). The more sites you have linking to your site, the higher your ranking. Invest some time in getting sites pointing to you.
.Don't "high tech" yourself out of a good search engine ranking. Complicated pages that are little more than graphics and plug-ins generally do NOT rank well with search engines. It is a little surprising to see websites that are incredibly "advanced" technically for some huge million dollar corporations that have eliminated some of the most basic elements that make the site rank well. In some cases their websites don"t even appear in the top listings if you do a search using the corporate name! Millions spent in design, advertising and marketing, and yet an effective--virtually free--traffic generation tool (search engine placement) lies wasted.
.Don't think you can "trick" the site into a high listing. The search engines are more than aware of "spam" techniques. Not only will "tricks" not get you a high listing, in some cases, they will completely eliminate your site from the search engine.
.Want a quick tip to improve your search engine ranking? Have text on your home page relating to the key words you are targeting and keep the text high on the page. For example, if you have a site devoted to cellular phones, you would want your home page to contain a good deal of information about cellular phones. Sounds obvious, right? Then why do so many home pages contain nothing but a huge graphic and not a word about the subject matter of the site?
